2007

Apart from a number of gigs the highlights of the year include recording an exciting new CD, learning quite a number of new songs and arrangements and singing with the Ziz Big Band on two occasions, and singing with the Brighton Goes Gospel Choir for two sell-out performances - one in the Brighton Festival Fringe in May and the other at Brighton's 1500 capacity Dome concert hall before Christmas.

Saturday September 29
Julie played a session in the fundraising concert for The Church of the Ascension in Haywards Heath. Picture below.

Jazz in the Park - Uckfield Festival
Rare to see Julie performing without her guitar, but she loves the role of the singer with a big band too.   Pictured here, as darkness fell, with the Ziz Big Band  in a free concert in Luxford Field (actually a park) on Saturday 14 July..

Singing at a gig at a private party in the French ski resort of Montgenevre, 4 September. With trumpeter and bandleader, Dave Fellingham. Our hosts were James and Julie, the only English family in the village. They make their living organising skiing, travel and accommodation, building their reputation on their unsurpassed local knowledge. If you are thinking of going skiing in the French Alps they could probably help you. Website: www.go-montgenevre.com

Saturday 22 September, with Gary Holder, playing a concert in the shopping centre in Burgess Hill to celebrate United Nations International Day of Peace. Still a lot to be done. Event organised by Mid Sussex Global Peace Campaign.

With The Collector
On 10 May, at short notice, Julie and Gary did a support gig for The Collector at The Bridge House, Copsale, near Horsham.

New CD
Julie and Gary's first CD has sold out.
They recorded stunning tracks for their new album during 2007.

They were accompanied by brilliant violinist, Mike Piggott on a couple of tracks, including the title track, Don't tell me to stop. The last two tracks were recorded with outstanding keyboard player, Mark Edwards, in July.

14 February
As well as singing with the big band for the Valentine "ball" Julie and Gary with keyboard player, Mark Edwards, provided the interval entertainment.

Gigs and appearances 2007

Julie photographed through heavy rain on stage at the Forum, Horsham, Saturday 23 June 2007. Well, it was the Glastonbury weekend.
From 10.30 in the morning till 5 pm there was a succession of talented performers - ending with the wonderful guitar mastery of the legendary Wizz Jones.

Julie and Gary. Same rain.
The Forum Stage provided part of the range of musical events available to the people of Horsham. That stage was sponsored by the Blue Flash Music Trust.

Friday 11 May, Julie and Gary did a support gig for The Collector at the Bridge House, Copsale, near Horsham.

A new show - Verse and Voice
Leonie Mansell and Julie Roberts with their new show at the Ifield Barn Theatre,
6 February

Julie has a new show to offer, working with performance poet, Leonie Mansell. Leonie is a razor sharp observer of modern life whose verse sparkles with wit and wickedness, but there are poignant poems, too. The talents of Leonie and Julie are combined to look at a number of themes (such as time, talent and relationships) from different angles in song and verse. The first show, at the Ifield Barn Theatre, Crawley, was a definite hit.

Leonie's collection of verse, The tattooed lady from Leamington Spa, was published in December.

January 21st, Sunday, Horsham Folk Club. Julie and Gary shared the programme with Carl and Leon Hogsden.

14 January BBC Southern Counties Radio and Radio Solent

At BBC Julie Roberts and Gary Holder play live 14 Jan 07

Julie and Gary played three numbers on Sunday 14 January on BBC Southern Counties Radio and Radio Solent. They found the experience of playing live from a busy studio great fun and "a learning experience."

They were there as the result of winning a small demo panel competition on BBC Southern Counties Radio show, South Live in August last year. One of the judges was Claire Martin, one of Britain's top jazz vocalists and presenter of BBC Radio 3 programme Jazz Line-up. Some of her comments appear on the intro page of this site. One of the things she said was that she would definitely go to one of Julie's gigs. She actually turned up to the studio to hear Julie sing on 14th January.

Claire Martin's tribute to Shirley Horne at the Komedia, Gardner Street, Brighton on Wednesday 7th February was a great gig. Britain's top jazz vocalist, with her brilliant band, thrilled the audience.
Claire's web site is www.clairemartinjazz.com.

Gary plays in five other bands, so he is very busy. See Gary's website for details.
