2004 Friends persuaded her

Urged on by friends Julie returned to “performing in public” in 2004. One of her earliest performances was a small spot at The Komedia Theatre in Brighton in Barb Jungr’s Café Prague.

Since 2004

Julie has been singing  jazz, blues and folk music with a variety of musicians (depending on the invitations she receives) and solo on occasions.  Julie plays guitar and piano. From time to time she is a guest singer with the Dave Fellingham Big Band and more recently has been performing  jazz, blues and popular standards with Swingbandit. She has performed in a number of charity concerts.

Festivals

Julie has performed at numerous festivals including Broadstairs, Brighton Fringe, Streatham, Arundel, Shoreham Wordfest, and Windsor Fringe.

In the Brighton Fringe Festival of 2008 Julie teamed up with performance poet, Leonie Mansell, to perform a show they called Airs and Disgraces. This interleaved punchy poems and sassy songs around several themes. From time to time the duo have perform excerpts from this show.

Also
Because she loves singing Julie  has for many years also sung in choirs - Ardingly Choral Society, Brighton Goes Gospel Choir, and currently Shoreham Singers By Sea.

Three CDs

Julie has made three CDs. See link above.

Julie Roberts is a versatile singer, but happiest with jazz and blues and the great song standards - especially when she has one or more great musicians to accompany her. Soul and folk songs feature in her repertoire too.

Singers and musicians she admires
include singers Nina Simone, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Dusty Springfield, Frank Sinatra,  Billy Joel, Antonio Carlos Jobim,

and musicians Mark Edwards, Mike Piggott, Raul D’ Oliveira, Bob McKay, Dave Fellingham, Malcolm Mortimer, Herbie Flowers, Michael Hinton . . .

Her favourite song-writers and composers include the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Billy Joel, Antonio Carlos Jobim, George Shearing, Johnny Mandel, Tracy Chapman, Rodgers and Hart, Elizabeth Jane Grey . . .

Perhaps Julie’s most challenging singing is with this prestigious Big Band which features several of the UK’s top bandsmen.

Julie is seen here singing with the Ziz All Star Big Band (later renamed the Dave Fellingham Big Band), 14 February, 2007, Brighton.

A memorable and distinctive voice

"Julie Roberts is a fabulous singer...

I love that dark smoky voice . . . She's really brilliant. . . really sophisticated . . . a great singer." - Claire Martin, top jazz vocalist and presenter of the Radio Three programme, Jazz Line-up, speaking on BBC South Live.

We hear many equally enthusiastic comments after Julie’s gigs.

Julie’s work with Michael Hinton  The “intro” page of this website gives details of Julie’s work with jazz pianist, Michael Hinton, along with some samples from a demo CD that you can hear immediately.

Julie’s background  For the past ten years Julie has performed around the south east of England in concert halls, music clubs, pubs, restaurants, an art gallery, and many festivals.

She has performed solo with guitar or keyboard, in a duo, with small groups of musicians and big bands.

Julie’s voice, Michael Hinton’s piano playing
Julie has worked with pianist, Michael Hinton, only since January 2016 but this is proving to be an exciting collaboration which enables Julie to sing the great blues, jazz, and popular standards from the swing era to the present day  -  the songs she loves best   -   and enabling them to create performances which audiences are responding to with great enthusiasm.
